Packing Series - The China Barrel

The China Barrel

People often don't realize that fragile items including dishware do not belong in single layered boxes. The China Barrel, sometimes referred to as Dish Barrel, is double lined to provide extra and support for your fragile items. When you are packing your kitchen, refrain from using anything but a double layered box or a China Barrel which is usually 5.1 cubic feet in size.

*TIP* Wrapping your fragile items in newsprint is not enough! Make sure before you place your items into your China Barrel that you line up to a 1/3rd of the bottom of the box with wadded newsprint or bumpers to provide a nice cushion to build a tier on. Every time you complete your tier, add a new layer of newsprint.

Another important tip for packing your fragile items is to stack your dishes vertically - never horizontally!

Packing Series - The Medium Box

These medium sized boxes are great for packing a wide variety of household goods; children’s toys, stuffed animals, pot & pans, light kitchen items, stereo equipment, computers & blankets. Items in dresser drawers will fit nicely in this box.

*TIP* Use three rows of tape to secure the bottom of the box; one right over the seam of the box, and two extra layers overlapping that initial layer on either side.

Many people chose the do-it-yourself moving approach or some combination of DIY and full service moving. Combination? If you didn't know, moving companies like Rent-a-Son offer moving labour or moving help to either load, unload or load and unload your truck rental. Moving help is an extremely excellent option for anyone moving long distance or using a one-way truck rental.

So whether you are relocating because of a job, a change of scenery or any other reason and you are renting a truck for your move, here are some moving guidelines;

1. Rent your truck well in advance!
Truck rental companies will often sell out the end of the month and if you wait too long, you may have to drive 300km's just to find an available truck. If you are looking for a one way truck rental, make sure you specify that at the time of the booking. Try and book your moving truck at least 5 weeks prior to your move.

2. Get the right equipment
Some truck rental companies offer moving supplies for purchase and moving equipment for rent. If you are looking to save anywhere on your move, don't make it on supplies and equipment. A $5 moving blanket is a worthy investment for a $300 tv stand. Here are the absolute essentials for your move:

Moving Blankets, Moving Blankets, Moving Blankets - Blankets are a movers greatest resource. If you think you need 12, rent 18.
Packing Tape - This is going to be helpful for assembling boxes, packing and securing blankets to your furniture
Boxes of all shapes and sizes - 2-3 cube boxes for books and heavy items, China Barrels for your kitchenware, lamp shades and any other fragile item you really want to protect, Mirror Cartons for any artwork, glass or mirrors and wardrobe boxes for your clothing
Bubble Wrap - this can be a very useful item for protecting your fragile items. It can be expensive sometimes so you may want to use packing paper or newsprint as a substitute for some items.
Dollies - Make sure you have access to a 2 wheel hand truck and a 4 wheel furniture dolly.
Strapping - Don't forget about straps. Good ratchet straps are ideal but in the absence of those, use twine, rope or anything else that can secure the load to the truck.

3. Pack an "open first" box - this will include things like drinks, food, hardware for assembly work and anything else that you would like to have access to immediately after you have unloaded.

4. Arrange for help - Whether you are hiring a moving helper service like Rent-a-Son's moving labour or having some friends/family by to help out, make sure you have enough manpower. Being organized can save time and stress on the day of the move. As a general guideline, loading a 16 foot truck with properly packaged and wrapped belongings should take between 4-5 hours for 2 professional movers. There are hundreds of factors that would change that time frame....like excessive stairs, far distance from access point to truck or having lots of small unpacked items.

We hope you have been able to learn a little bit more about moving on your own. Moving yourself doesn't have to be a difficult experience. The key is in good preparation, proper packing and having the right tools. When loading the truck make sure you evenly distribute the weight of your belongings and focus on filling it one quarter at a time.

How do you find a good Toronto Moving Company?

Here are a few tips...

Do not deal with any companies that do not have a physical address posted on their website.
I always find the about us section of a website can tell you a lot about a company. Go to your prospective moving companies about us page to learn more about the moving company you are interested in.
Always choose movers who are members of the Canadian Association of Movers. CAM is a great indicator of a moving company that takes moving seriously. Canadian Association of Movers members are required to meet a certain code of ethics as well as particular insurance requirements.
Get your estimate in writing and make sure you understand the charges associated with the move. It goes without saying that when a price looks to good to be true, it usually is.
Check out online moving company reviews.
Ask your friends and family for a referral. A moving company that provides a successful move for your family or friends will usually provide the same service for you too.
Be wary of moving companies that do not ask for a list of your items or for very detailed information. It is impossible to provide an accurate estimate without good information.
Moving blankets may be Gods gift to movers but they are not appropriate for dealing with all of your belongings. Make sure your glass, mirrors and fragile items are handled and wrapped properly.

How the right moving boxes can make a difference.

It's quite common for movers to scavenge grocery and liquor stores for moving boxes to save money on supplies but doing so can actually end up costing more. Here are a few arguments for purchasing moving boxes or renting plastic moving boxes for your move;

1. Uniform boxes save you time. One of the biggest challenges and time consuming aspects to loading a truck or storage container is making use of the available space. Piecing your boxes and belongings like a puzzle adds time to your load by requiring a more complex loading strategy. Uniform boxes are easy to stack and save you time and of course as a result; money!

2. Used boxes are dirty. Traces of food and insects have been found in used boxes picked up from grocery and liquor stores. The only way to avoid this is to purchase or rent moving boxes.

3. Protect your belongings. Moving boxes are more complicated than they appear to be. Special boxes, like china barrels, provide extra lining to protect your dish and glassware. A broken bowl or vase can often amount to more than total purchase of new boxes alone.

4. Used boxes aren't as sturdy. The structural integrity of a used box can sometimes be compromised. Most moving companies do not provide insurance on items that break in boxes that are not packed by the moving company itself. That means if something breaks or if the box collapses or opens up and the contents inside the box break, the liability is on you.

Are you moving from your apartment or condo soon. Since we do so many apartment and condo moves we figured we would offer a simple step by step guide to preparing your home for your move.

1. Arrange for a moving service well in advance. Whether you are going to be renting a truck and loading yourself, hiring moving labour to help you load and/or unload your truck, or hiring full service movers do this at least a month in advance. By doing this, you can guarantee yourself your desired dates and times for the moving service and coordinate your service elevator. Do your due diligence and be aware of rogue movers. Look for things like online reviews and try and go with a moving company that presents the following; insurance, better business bureau accredation, in business for 3 or more years, has an address on their website or promotional material and is a member of the Canadian Asssociation of Movers.

2. Start packing your home early. Make sure to get good advice on how to properly pack your home or hire a packing service. There are many different types of moving boxes out there and even plastic moving boxes that are environmentally friendly and easy to work with. Things like newsprint and bubble wrap are essential for the safe packing of your fragile items and kitchenware. Ask a professional mover for sound advice on how to protect your items well before your moving date. Glass, televisions and artwork require special care.

3. Pack an essentials box. This is a box that will be loaded last into the moving truck and as a result will come out first so put aside everything you need immediate access to and keep it in this box.

4. Confirm all of your moving services or moving trucks the day before your move. Talk to your apartment building management to make sure the elevators haven't been double booked and that the loading area will be clear for use on the day of the move.

5. Make sure on the day of the move that you or the moving service you hired is blanket wrapping all of your furniture and appliances. Loading items bare into your truck will cause damage. Blankets are a must for any professional full service moving company but may have to be rented if you are doing the move yourself or hiring a moving labour service.

6. Have lots of drinks and food for the day of the move and enjoy your move. Properly preparing for your move can help you avoid preventable issues and obstacles on your moving day.

What to look for in a mover

We book thousands of moves a year at Rent-a-Son and find a lot of customers aren't always sure what to look for when hiring a moving service.

Here is a list of several things you should always look out for when contracting movers or moving help for your move:

1. Insurance - make sure the company you are hiring for your move has liability and workers comp insurance. Proof can be obtained easily by asking for a copy of the companies wsib clearance certificate and their proof of their liability policy.

2. Get something in writing - so many horror stories float around year after year about shoddy moving companies that add surprise costs to your move during or after the move is complete. Things like holding your belongings hostage until more money is forked over! It is hard to believe but it happens so always get something in writing.

3. Get references - you can ask for testimonials/references from the company or just search online. There are many online websites devoted to hosting customer reviews and you can usually find even more quality feedback about moving companies on blogs and social networks. So just simply type in the (Name of Business) Reviews into google.

4. Age of the Business - one more great way to determine whether or not a moving company should be trusted is by finding out how long the business has been around for. Most service businesses rely on their reputation to grow and so few that have been around longer than 5 years - under the same operating name - would do anything to jeopardize their reputation.

Search your local Better Business Bureau, ask friends and just be careful when hiring for your next move. A high hourly rate doesn't always mean you are getting a better service. Don't sell yourself short - if you are paying a competitive rate for a mover you deserve to have a safe, friendly and well paced move.

Many people haven't discovered the relatively new industry that is mobile storage. The concept is actually quite simple but at the same time it is revolutionizing the industry. A lot of movers require extra time in between moves. Before portable storage, movers would load their belongings into a truck rental or with a full service moving company, then unload their stuff into a storage facility or with the moving companies storage. When it was time to finally move in to their new place they would have to do the loading and unloading all over again.

Many people call us for moving help to load and unload their truck rentals but don't know where to rent the trucks! I think because of the great branding and product placements by U-haul they are always the default. But! We always advise our customers strongly to stay away from U-Haul. Whenever our customers don't listen to us, we often find them following up with us to let us know that we were right.

So, I think it is time we let you know who you should use. There definitely isn't a "top" truck rental company but there are a list of "top" truck rental companies. I would have to say that based on my experience, the companies that I would recommend to our clients for their move are (in no particular order):

We have blogging for some time now but have never really provided great content through it. Well that is about to change. Inspect and clean dust from the covers of your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
Make sure the caulking around doors and windows is adequate to reduce heat/cooling loss
Make sure that the caulking around your bathroom fixtures is adequate to prevent water from seeping into the sub-flooring

Check all window and door locks for proper operation

Windows that can be opened by breaking the glass and unlocking them, are less effective deterrents to criminals. Check with the hardware store for window lock alternatives.
All exterior doors should have deadbolt locks.

Check your home for water leaks

Make sure there are working nightlights at the top and bottom of all stairs

Other safety ideas for stairs:

Tile and painted wood or concrete stairs can be slippery when wet or when a person's shoes are wet. Resurface the treads with slip-resistant strips near the stair nosing.
All stairs of at least three risers should have a handrail.
Do not store items on the stairs.

Have a heating professional check your heating system every year

Woodburning stove connector pipes and chimneys should be inspected by a certified chimney sweep at least annually.

Protect your home from frozen pipes

Replace your furnace filter

Furnace filters need to be replaced frequently to allow your heating and cooling systems to operate properly.

Run all gas-powered lawn equipment until the fuel tank is empty

By doing this, you are removing flammable liquid storage from your garage. At the same time, make sure you aren't storing dirty, oily rags in a pile. They can ignite spontaneously.

Have a certified chimney sweep inspect and clean the flues and check your fireplace damper

Soot and creosote, which build up inside the chimney, can ignite when a fire is lit in the fireplace.

Remove bird nests from chimney flues and outdoor electrical fixtures

Bird nests on top of light fixtures are a fire hazard. Bird nests in chimney flues can prevent a proper venting of combustion gases and can catch fire from sparks. You should exercise great caution when working on your roof or consider hiring a qualified professional to take care of any work that needs to be done.

Wow! What a day. We turned a disaster of a yard into a beautiful and serene landscape for the homeowners to enjoy. Ben and Nick did an amazing job and you will be able to see their work Monday and Tuesday night on City News. We definitely had some obstacles to face....4 tonnes of trash, 1 dead skunk, and large yard to make over. Pictures will follow soon.
